Humility like Jesus
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves Phil 2:3
In this passage (2:5-8), we see Jesus Christ, our Master, take three steps down. We, as His disciples, are to possess this same spirit. “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,” (Phil 2:5). We are not to take the same steps, but possess the attitude, which will in our own lives lead to some difficult steps.
1. Gave up His right to glory (Phil 2:6-7a). 2. Took on the form of a man, a creature (Phil 2:7b-8a) 3. In His righteousness; He voluntarily died the death of a cursed man. (Phil 2:8)
Is not Jesus’ example a good enough reason to be humble in mind especially when it is for you His people He denied Himself for?
Now, in introducing us to the humility of Christ, Paul says to us, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” In other words, we are to imitate Christ. We are to be like Christ. We are to be humble instead of proud. Like Jesus, we are to seek God’s glory rather than our own.
Lord, make me humble and totally surrounded to your will. And behave by considering others better than me. Amen.
